Working From Home Tanked My Productivity

Working from home sounded like a dream come true. No more long commutes, no more office politics, and the freedom to work in my pajamas all day long. But as the pandemic forced us all to shift to remote work, I soon realized that working from home wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. In fact, it tanked my productivity.

At first, I was excited to have all the extra time in the morning that I used to spend commuting. But as the days went by, I found myself struggling to get started on work. I would procrastinate by checking my social media accounts or watching videos on YouTube. Before I knew it, half the day had passed and I had barely made any progress on my work.

The lack of structure in my day also made it harder to stay focused. Without the routines and rhythms of the office, I found myself getting distracted by household chores, phone calls, and even my pets. I would spend hours working on something that would have taken me just a fraction of the time in the office.

I also missed the face-to-face interactions with my colleagues. Sure, we had video calls and chats, but it wasn’t the same as being able to walk over to someone’s desk and bounce ideas off them. I felt isolated and disconnected, and it affected my motivation and creativity.

As the weeks turned into months, I started to feel the weight of the uncompleted tasks and the piling workload. I realized that working from home was not as ideal as I thought it would be, and it was taking a toll on my mental health as well.

So, what did I do? I started implementing some changes to my routine. I created a dedicated workspace and established a clear work schedule. I also took regular breaks and made sure to get outside and get some fresh air. And most importantly, I reached out to my colleagues and made an effort to stay connected.

Working from home may have tanked my productivity initially, but I learned that with some adjustments, it’s possible to make it work. It takes discipline, structure, and good communication, but it’s worth it to be able to work from the comfort of your own home.
